Shanxi Agricultural University (SXAU) was originally known as Mingxian School which was founded in 1907 by Kong Xiangxi (Kung Hsiang-his / H. H. Kung). It was a private school at first and was approved as a public college in 1951. In 1979, SXAU adopted its present name and became a national key university. In 2005, SXAU got the Excellency Awards after an evaluation of undergraduate teaching conducted by the Ministry of Education of China. In 2012, it has been co-sponsored by the Shanxi Provincial Government and the Ministry of Agriculture of China. There are currently over 1600 staff members as well as a total of 20,000 full-time students.
The past 100 years witnessed SXAU generations adhering to the educational philosophy of “advocating study and agriculture, constructing SXAU through arduous struggle” and practicing the University Motto of “Diligent, Pragmatic, United and Enterprising”. SXAU gives prime concern to the nation and the people, persist in integration of production-learning-research, aim to build a “leading teaching and research agricultural university around the region”, and have made significant contributions to Shanxi and China’s agricultural development as well as economic growth.
SXAU encompasses eight academic fields in agriculture, science, engineering, economics, management, humanities, law and art. It comprises 15 colleges and departments, offering 67 specialties. It includes the College of Agriculture, the College of Forestry, the College of Animal Science and Technology, the College of Resources and Environment, the College of Horticulture, the College of Engineering, the College of Economics and Trade, the College of Food Engineering, the College of Art and Science, the College of Life Science, the College of Information Science and Engineering, the College of Software, the College of Urban and Rural Construction, the College of Public Management and the Department of Physical Education. It has 8 postdoctoral research stations, 5 Ph.D. programs and 13 Master's programs in Level I Disciplines, 26 Ph.D. programs and 50 Master's programs in Level II Disciplines as well as 5 Professional Master's Programs. In addition, SXAU has one state key fostering discipline, 5 key disciplines at provincial levels and 90 laboratories and 10 product bases. The library building, with a total floor space of 26,400 sq. meters, has a collection of over 1,500,000 volumes, and subscribes to over 15,000 kinds of periodicals.
SXAU has enforced a 100-year friendship with Oberlin College in the USA. With the help of joint education program between SXAU and Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Germany, there has been totally 1100 students go for overseas study. In addition, SXAU exchanges students with University of Rzeszów in Poland and Chaoyang University of Technology in Taiwan. SXAU participates actively in academic exchanges and establishes cooperative relations with overseas universities and institutions in more than 10 countries, including USA, Germany, Australia, Japan, UK, Ireland New Zealand and so forth. Since the policy of reform and opening up, SXAU welcomes more than 400 foreign experts and scholars to teach and sends over 200 scholars abroad for further study.
SXAU, a garden-style institution, is a blend of ancient and modern, a mixture of Orient and Occident, a combination of culture and nature. Railway, roads and highway lines crisscross within the nearby region. It merely takes one hour from Taigu to Taiyuan (the capital city) or Wusu Airport (the largest airport in Shanxi Province). The relics of Mingxian School are well-preserved ancient architectural complex dating back to the Qing Dynasty and the period of Republic of China, which won its laurels of National Cultural Relic Protection Unit. With over 85% coverage of landscaping area on main campus, SXAU is endowed with natural forest resources, including 30,000 shrubs and trees, 40 types of landscape tree seed, 100-odds rare century-old trees and above 50 valuable and rare types of tree seeds.
Building on its century-long history, Shanxi Agricultural University is today pursuing a strategy of developing into first-class agricultural universities.
